living in the sin is the new thing

purely music related post coming

So yesterday my favorite diva in the world released her latest single "3" from her upcoming compilation "The Singles Collection". The upcoming compilation will be the third in her decade long career ("B In The Mix", "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative") and is celebrating her decade long career. Yes Britney Spears broke out onto the scene in '98 with her first album being released in '99. Her new single "3" is fantastic! Now being the huge Britney fan that I am it is hard to be objective but it's doable I promise. This song is not up there with her biggest and best ("Toxic", "Piece of Me", "Slave 4 U") but I will contend it's in the Top 10 for me. Firstly this isn't a single meant to promote an album full of new material but an album that compiles her entire career. This song does the perfect job at summarizing her entire career in 3:33 (coincidence?). First, it's controversial. Britney is no stranger to controversy. From her racy break-out video "...Baby One More Time", to her fleshy dancing at the 2000 VMAs, to her iconic lesbian kiss in the 2003 VMAs Britney has learned to use controversy to her advantage. Her newest single deals with a nice subtle subject: a threesome. Second, it's got her entire career in music wrapped up in a nice package. We have the sweet bubblegum pop from her early days, mixed with the sauciness of her "Britney" and "In The Zone" days, mixed with the throbbing electropop in "Blackout", with a bit of the tongue-in-cheek lyrics from "Circus" thrown in. Not only is it a good synopsis of her career but it also sets the tone for the next decade. Where will she end up? With rumors of producers David Guetta, Diplo, Lucas Secon, Bloodshy & Avant, and more joining her for her new album I'm sure she'll be calling the shots in pop for another decade.
Grade: B+
